FAQ
Decoder enables users to instantly retrieve essential asset metadata spanning specifications, features, and performance levels derived only from basic, user-provided asset nameplate information (such as model number, serial number, and manufacturer).
Simply upload your file of manufacturer, model, and serial numbers and Decoder will cleanse, repair, and fetch asset-level metadata for each asset record. Decoder accepts the most common file types such as .csv and .xlsx and the data on-boarding process is simple, intuitive, and interactive – eliminating all tedious, up-front file formatting work.
Don’t worry, we expect far-from-perfect model and serial number data. Our proprietary algorithms detect and repair the most common syntax and semantic errors – enabling Decoder to consistently provide asset metadata from even the most challenging data issues.
Decoder flags assets as “validated” or “indeterminate” – providing cues when some model and/or serial numbers cannot be decoded. “Validated” means Decoder was able to successfully find a match for the model and/or serial number. “Indeterminate” means Decoder was unable to validate the model and/or serial number to return metadata.
Exporting your enriched HVAC asset data (including your newly acquired asset-level metadata) is simple and intuitive – enabling CMMS data quality reporting or large-scale updates for near-impossible-to-find errors.
Dating back nearly 50 years, our asset-level metadata spans 50 major OEM’s and includes over 20,000 records for the most common commercial asset types – with new brands, types, and assets added continuously.

Can’t find what you’re looking for? Sometimes we may not have data on a particular asset type or a model and/or serial number simply cannot be repaired sufficiently to return asset metadata. We’ve got you covered here too – Specifx does not count usage when we cannot provide metadata.
As many as you like! Decoder is built for enterprise scale – it can uniquely batch decode thousands of asset records at a time and we provide transparent reporting on monthly and annual usage.
All Decoder metadata is sourced directly from manufacturer literature (including catalogs, product data sheets, and installation manuals) and thoroughly vetted by before being added to our library.
Because terminology and/or presentation of HVAC specifications, features, and performance levels may vary by manufacturer, we harmonize the manufacturer data to conform to a uniform, industry-accepted organizational structure with intuitive field descriptions.
